Vision and Mission

Adharshila aims to provide high quality, meaningful education to children of extremely poor families of the area. Adharshila will develop into a learning hub for this region, by expanding the outreach of its innovative livelihood skill development work not just to its own students, but to other youth and adolescents.

Through a sustained focus on high quality, joyful, holistic and meaningful education, Adharshila will create within a decade a critical mass of dedicated young individuals who will spearhead rapid social, economic and political transformation of this region. Most importantly, Adharshila will be an oasis among this region of scarcity, where each child finds joy in learning, and which she can look back upon with fondness when she grows up, so that she always has an incentive to contribute to her homeland, from wherever her life takes her.

The Adharshila Shiksha Samiti was registered in 2003 to take forward the education initiatives of Samrakshan Trust in the Sheopur district of Madhya Pradesh. In its initial years, Adharshila ran single-teacher schools in unused government school buildings, to provide primary education to Adivasi children (belonging to the Sahariya tribe) from households that were displaced in 1999-2000 from the nearby Kuno wildlife sanctuary.

Given the poor quality of agricultural land and limited availability of water, agricultural growth prospects are limited, especially for the displaced Adivasi population of the area. Quality school education is critical for children from chronically poor households to diversify into well paying non-farm livelihood activities.

In 2005, the Samiti established the Adharshila School in village Agraa as an exemplary private school that could provide holistic, high quality primary education, which the government schools of the area were unable to deliver. Gradually, this education initiative was expanded up to the middle school (Class 8) and then the secondary school (Class 10) level.

Today, the Adharshila High School covers more than 15 villages and over 275 children in Classes 1 to 10, to whom it provides meaningful, joyful, end-to-end education solutions.
